Receiver software updates
We're always looking for ways to improve your TV experience. One way we can do this is to upgrade the software that operates your Shaw Direct receiver - the box connected to your TV that relays information from the satellite so you can enjoy your programming.
We do this automatically. Think of it like computer software. The upgrades can be used to deliver new services and functionality to your On-Screen Guide, which you may notice, or make other improvements to how signals are transmitted, which you may not notice.
When the satellite is downloading, you will be not be able to access the Guide, or any video on your screen. We perform the updates late at night to minimize your TV viewing impact. The process usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Often, a download timer will appear on your screen so you know what is happening. If you have an HDTV connected with an HDMI to DVI cable, your TV screen will be black during the download. The countdown will appear on the display panel on the front of your receiver (excluding HDDSR 600 receivers).
Once the download is complete, your receiver will reset automatically. If the download timer appears on your screen for longer than 90 minutes, please call Shaw Direct Technical Support at 1.866.782.7932.
To help you understand these updates, please see the following Frequently Asked Questions;
- How do I know if I have the latest software on my receiver?
- Can I keep the current version software I have now?
- How do I know when an upgrade is planned?
1. How do I know if I have the latest software on my receiver?
Receiver software updates occur automatically, ensuring your receiver is always up to date. No action is required on your part to receive the latest software.
To check if a newer software version is available, press OPTIONS on your Shaw Direct remote control then choose: 6 - System Setup (if available), 4 - System Settings, and then 7 - System Status (Options 6-4-7). On line "I" you will see the heading Target Version. If you see a value for target version, you do not have the latest software and your receiver is set to automatically update overnight. If target version reads "00.00", you have the latest software on your receiver.
2. Can I keep the current version software I have now?
Software updates are automatic and mandatory. The upgrades not only give you access to the latest features, they are also used to prepare receivers for new signal technology and other important improvements.
3. How do I know when an upgrade is planned?
Shaw Direct tries to ensure our customers are aware of changes to their receiver technology, especially when it impacts features like the On-Screen Guide. Visit the Tech News section of the website or SHAWDIRECT.CA/SOFTWAREUPDATE for details. At times, we may also use Receiver Mail to inform you about upcoming upgrades.
