- Shaw Direct current-generation satellite set-top box.
- High-speed internet (minimum 1.75 Mbps for SD, 5.0 Mbps for HD).
- A home router, with at least 1 free Ethernet port.
- An Ethernet cable to connect the satellite set-top box to your home router.
What is an Ethernet cable?
An Ethernet cable (also known as a network cable, Cat5e cable, Cat6 cable, patch cable, or RJ45 cable) is the standard cable used for networking.
Ethernet cables have larger ends and cable than phone cable, but otherwise look similar.
A basic Cat5e patch cable is all that is required to connect your satellite set-top box to your router.
How to connect
- Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to a free port on your home modem / router.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the network port on the back of your satellite set-top box.
- Check the router to ensure the connection lights have illuminated.
- Go and read the next section on how to verify connections.
How to verify connections
- Press OPTIONS 4-6 on your remote control to access the "Network Status" screen.
- Once the screen loads, look at the "A. Link Status", "B. Home network status", "C. Internet connectivity status", and "D. SOD server status" lines. All four fields must read "Online".
How to troubleshoot connections
What if one or more field reads "Not Available"?
- Double-check that you're connected properly. The connection lights on your router or Power Line Bridge should indicate an active connection.
- Exit and re-enter the Network menu. If one or more fields still read "Not Available", press B to perform a "DHCP Refresh". Wait for the 60 second countdown to complete, and then check the "Network Status" menu again.
- If one or more field still reads "Not Available", restart the satellite set-top box.
- Once your set-top box restarts, if one or more fields still read "Not Available" you can connect a laptop or other device to the network cable to see if the connection is active.
How to perform speed test
- Press A Button to access the menu bar.
- Scroll to "Settings" > "Status" and then "Network Status".
- Press A on your remote to perform speed test.
- A message on the screen will display if the bandwidth is sufficient for SD and HD viewing. If failed, it will present you with a fail code (see below for fail codes).
NOTE: If your remote does not have an A button, a speed test can also be run after selecting a VOD title.
