Shaw Direct is committed to addressing the needs and concerns of all our customers, including providing accessibility for customers with disabilities. The following describes the particular products and services offered to Shaw Direct customers with accessibility challenges.

Closed captioning

Closed captioning (CC) displays text on the screen, usually a transcript of a program’s audio. Closed captioning is provided to Shaw by broadcasters and included in an unedited form with the TV signal.

Broadcasts with closed captioning should be indicated by a CC logo in the Guide.

Accessing closed captioning on Your TV

When connected via standard definition (SD) connections, closed captions can be processed and displayed by the TV. Most TVs sold in the last 20 years have Closed Captioning available through Menu options described in the owner's manual.

Accessing closed captioning on your satellite set-top box

Closed captioning can be toggled on or off temporarily using the remote by pressing HELP, C, to closed captioning permanently on/off, you can enabled/disabled through OPTIONS, "Preferences"

Accessible Media Inc (AMI)

Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) is a not-for-profit multimedia organization serving more than five million Canadians who are blind, partially sighted, deaf, hard of hearing, mobility or print restricted. Operating three broadcast services, AMI-tv and AMI-audio in English and AMI-télé in French, AMI’s mission is to make accessible media for all Canadians.

Descriptive Video Service

Descriptive Video Service (DVS) is an aid for persons who are visually impaired. Descriptive Video Services (DVS) provides ongoing narrative descriptions of what is happening during the video portion of a television broadcast. You can think of DVS like a narrator during a documentary. For example: when members of a crew on a home improvement show build a house, DVS will provide an ongoing narrative of the building process. Any original narration from actors during the program will remain uninterrupted. This service can greatly improve the television experience for customers with limited vision or who enjoy added narration during a television program.

Broadcasts with Descriptive Video should be indicated by a D)) logo in the Guide.

Not all programs are available with Descriptive Video and this service is provided at the sole discretion of the television programmers and networks.

Accessing Descriptive Video Services on Your Shaw Direct set-top box

To quickly enable to disable descriptive video temporarily, press HELP, D, to permanently turn descriptive video on/off, it can enabled/disabled through OPTIONS, "Preferences". If enabled, note that you may experience a loss of audio on programming not featuring Descriptive Video.

The Manager for Accessibility is responsible for addressing accessibility feedback. You can provide feedback by online form, email, phone or mail. We will acknowledge accessibility feedback received, other than feedback provided anonymously. If contact information is shared, we may follow up with you. Personal information you provide will remain confidential and will be managed following privacy laws. This information will only be shared per these laws or with your consent.
